01Overview

What is ICS and SCADA security?

ICS and SCADA security protects industrial control systems, the PLCs, RTUs, HMIs and supervisory servers that monitor and run physical processes, from cyber attack, misuse and accidental disruption, while keeping the plant safe and running.

These systems were designed for reliability and long life, with little thought for authentication or encryption. As they connect to business networks and remote support, they become reachable by attackers.

Our approach is to learn the process first, observe passively, and then recommend controls in order of risk reduction per hour of plant downtime.

03How we work

From walk-through to monitored plant

Safety rules are agreed before anything is connected.

  1. Step 1 · Weeks 1 to 2

    Observe

    Passive discovery.

  3. Step 3 · Weeks 5 to 8

    Assess

    Gap and risk assessment.

  4. Step 4 · Week 9

    Roadmap

    Prioritised plan.

  5. Step 5 · Months 3 to 9

    Protect

    Hardening and segmentation.

  6. Step 6 · Ongoing

National energy operatorOT security assessment

OT assessment and segmentation for an energy operator

Plant networks had grown without a clear map, and remote access for vendors was a concern.

  • Passive discovery of OT assets without touching production
  • Purdue-model segmentation design and industrial firewall rules
  • Secure remote access for vendors with session recording

Result: A mapped, segmented network with a prioritised remediation plan the plant team could schedule.

Industrial manufacturerIoT security review

Security review of a connected-device platform

A manufacturer was rolling out connected devices and needed to know the design was safe.

  • Threat model of device, gateway and cloud
  • Firmware and protocol testing
  • Secure update and identity design

Result: Design changes made before mass rollout.

Tier-1 Saudi bankRed team exercise

A threat-led red team exercise for a bank

The bank needed evidence that its people, processes and detection would hold up against a realistic attacker, in line with SAMA expectations.

  • Agreed rules of engagement and a threat scenario with the CISO
  • Ran a controlled exercise against production systems
  • Ran a purple team workshop so defenders could see every step

Result: Detection gaps were fixed, playbooks were updated and the board received a plain-language report.

10Questions answered

ICS and SCADA Security FAQs

What is SCADA?

Supervisory control and data acquisition is a system for remotely monitoring and controlling industrial processes, using HMIs, controllers and communication networks.

Can you assess a plant without stopping production?

Yes. We use passive monitoring and offline analysis, plan any active steps with the operations team, and avoid disruptive actions.

What is a Purdue model?

A reference model that divides industrial networks into levels from sensors to enterprise systems, used to design zones and control traffic between them.

What is IEC 62443?

A series of international standards for industrial automation and control system security, defining zones, conduits, security levels and responsibilities.

Do you test PLCs and controllers?

Only with agreement and under strict safety rules, usually in a lab or maintenance window. Most work is passive.

How do you monitor OT networks?

By passively copying network traffic to sensors that understand industrial protocols and detect abnormal behaviour, then forwarding alerts to a SOC.

How often should an OT assessment be repeated?

At least every one to two years, and after significant changes to the plant or its connectivity.
